Free Social Studies Worksheets, Lesson Plans, and Printables for First Grade

A week ago, I wrote about how I'm using certain textbooks to teach first grade social studies.  My blog entry, Social Studies for First Grade, showed two books, one secular and one Christian-based.  Those are books that I've accumulated over the years.  This week, I want to share some websites which provide free worksheets, lesson plans, and/or printables pertaining to first grade history and social studies.

Social Studies for First Grade

As with the other subjects, I have accumulated several resources for social studies.  For first grade, I have the two books above for my daughter to read.  They both cover the idea of families.  Kaelyn gets to find out about her place within her community.

Silver Burdett & Ginn Social Studies: Familes and Their Needs can be bought through Amazon.  This book covers issues relating to the school, neighborhoods, and our country.  My daughter will be reading about community workers like chefs and car mechanics.  Our basic needs of food, clothing and housing is also covered, too.

Heritage Studies for Christian Schools 1 is also available through Amazon.  I have an older version that was published in 1979.  This book covers the community of a child, through a Christian outlook.  That is the first half.  The second half goes into the early beginnings of America.

I want to help those of you who might be interested in buying the Heritage Studies set.  You can buy the textbook through Amazon.com.  Then, you can find the workbook at  Christianbook.com.  I won't be buying the workbook because the publisher's year of my copy is too old and won't be compatible with the edition (year of publication) of the workbook.

Perhaps next week, I will come up with some worksheets that can be used for first grade social studies.  Stay tuned!

Language Arts for First Grade

Large phonics workbook--American Education Publishing

Two weeks ago, I posted Reading for First Grade.  I gave a list of books that we will choose from for reading.  Today, I want to show what we will be using for Language Arts.

The 5 W's Reading Skills--Bryan House publisher

I consider this workbook for learning about what needs to be included in good writing, whether for sentences and/or paragraphs.  The cover mentions that this workbook builds reading skills.  It is a great workbook because each reproducible provides a reading passage and simple questions to answer.

Starfall.com workbook

I love everything about Starfall.  The website is great for the emerging reader.  This workbook had been offered for free years ago.  I took advantage and had sent out for 4 sets, one set for each of my children.  I held onto this one for my youngest.

The website offers the workbook, in PDF, for free.  You can also buy the workbooks cheaply.

Spelling & Writing--Carson-Dellosa

I'm thinking that I'll use this small workbook, (pictured above) which includes a chart and stickers, after the Starfall workbook is finished.  It would function nicely as a summer enrichment workbook.

Spelling Super Workbook--Hooked On Phonics

I like the Hooked On Phonics product line.  The workbooks feature lots of colorful pictures.  This spelling workbook includes charts and stickers to show progress.  This large workbook is split into chapters.  The answers are provided, too.

Reading for First Grade

Reading choice Pre-K--1st grade

Assigned reading is one thing.  Reading comprehension is another.  Reading to learn is very important.  That's why I have books of all kinds.  I even have some textbooks for several grades that I've collected over the years.  It's good to have a variety for free reading.

Yes, for reading, my incoming first grader, Kaelyn will have a lot to choose from.  For example, the paperback book above is a collection of 10 readers in one.  This was put out by Modern Publishing.

PP-pre-primer basal reader--Scott, Foresman publisher

The book above is labeled PP, probably meaning pre-primer.  Collections: You're Invited is a set of easy to read stories full of colorful pictures.  I love these kinds of books.  My daughter has read a few of the stories already.  I know that my now 11 year-old read this book, too.

1st Grader Reader--Houghton Mifflin publisher

I plan to place these books on shelves in the girl's room.  Kaelyn can have easy access to them.  I don't want her to run out of reading material. 

1st grade level 5--McGraw-Hill publisher

You might come across something having two numbers.  In the case of the book above, it means that the book is for a reading level of first grade 5 months.  That means that the child who is reading this has reached a level of reading of beyond first grade.  A traditional school year consists of 9 months.  You might also see standardized tests give results like that, too--1.5.

Of course, I wish I had complete sets of readers, but I must be satisfied with what I've found from yard sales, flea market finds, and thrift store shopping.

Christian-based readers--A Beka publisher

The A Beka Book Reading Program consists of a set of readers, probably about 10 paperback books.

The two that I have are:

1.3 Seesaw

1.9 Strong and True

Ebay has the whole set for sale for about $35.

Reading comprehension Workbook Grade 1

 

The School Zone Publishing Company came up with this wonderful workbook.  Reading Comprehension 1 covers such reading skills as:

"...identifying the main idea

selecting supporting details

...drawing conclusions"

(taken from inside cover)

 

The workbook above will help me teach Kaelyn the specific skills she needs to understand her reading.  It should be lots of fun to go through the pages with her.
