The Intention of My Blog

Welcome, my beloved readers!

In case you're wondering, it's not a typo up there for you see the definition of goodly is:

used as an adjective to describe something
1. of ample or good size, ex: a goodly amount.
2. of a fine appearance, ex: a goodly young man.
3. Archaic. of good quality, ex: a goodly gift.

I am a mother who home educates her children; I would be pleased if you'd look around. You never know if I might have something to your liking. I've blogged about different topics. I hope you enjoy your stay here. May God bless you with peace, a renewing of your mind, and rest as you read my posts.

Please remember to subscribe to my blog, using any variety of methods, which are below to the right, including Facebook.

Thanks to all for your patience as I have been on the mend. I had double heart bypass surgery in February of 2013, and I needed to focus on my recovery, which has been in steady progress. Thanks for your kind consideration.

Teaching How to Tell Time With Technology

Clock face with numbers
Digital Alarm Clock

Early this month, I wrote a blog entry about How to Tell Time.  In it, I explained how I've used manipulatives to teach my children how to tell time.  I also included websites where worksheets can be found to aid in teaching children how to tell time.  This week, I wanted to provide some websites where you can find technological aids to teach children how to tell time.

Here are some websites that provide technological aids to teach how to tell time:

Time for time website

Time for Friends website (Make sure to maximize screen for the game)

YouTube videos about time

Online clock manipulation

Souped Up Timers

Puzzle-type clock

Actual projects to make clocks

Clock product

Puzzle-type clock

A parent or a teacher can use an actual clock to teach about how to tell time; that in itself would be technological enough.  A digital clock can be used.  A clock with the twelve numbers and two hands can be used.  A project to put an actual clock together can help to teach about time, too.  Finally, a website with a virtual clock can be used, as well.

Well, thanks for viewing this quick blog entry about learning how to tell time with technology.

How about you, my readers?  Have you ever used online games to teach about time?  If so, did your children enjoy learning about clocks with the games?  Or did they like using actual clocks?  I think a virtual clock is a practical, economical method to learn about time.  I believe in finding technological tools to help in the home school; I hope you would consider using technology in your schools, too.

I pray that God gives you all, my beloveds, His wisdom and peace.

How to Teach About Time

Tellling Time Flip Book

Printable clock puzzles
Cutout match ups of clocks

Teaching time can be lots of fun.  The concept of time is complex but doable.  Hands on materials, worksheets, and actual clocks can prove useful to teach a young child how to tell time.  Because I have taught my oldest from a young age, I have a collection of useful teaching tools to use with my youngest child.

I found the clock puzzle many years ago.  Unfortunately, I can't find the website where I found it.  The cutout match up was in a workbook.  I cut it out so that I could use it with more than one child.  The two top manipulatives I bought many years ago but found websites where they are available.

Following are some websites where you can find worksheets to teach time:

Well, thanks for viewing this entry about teaching the concept of time.  I hope I've given you some ideas for teaching about time, one of the first math concepts for the elementary grades.

On Tuesday, I will provide a list of websites that
provide games and "time" products.
Stay tuned!

How about you, my readers?  How have you taught your children about time?  Have you ever considered using real clocks, manipulatives, and worksheets to teach early childhood learning concepts?  Your children can benefit from using a hands on method to learn.

May God bless us all with His wisdom and peace, as we teach your children.

Life At a Natural Pace: My Contemplation of Verse 29 of the Tao Te Ching

Dr. Dyer's book is Change your Thoughts--Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao.

Today, I delve into verse 29 of the Tao Te Ching, especially these portions:

Allow your life to unfold naturally.
Know that it too is a vessel of perfection.
Just as you breathe in and breathe out,
there is a time for being ahead
and a time for being behind;
a time for being in motion
and a time for being at rest;
a time for being vigorous
and a time for being exhausted;
a time for being safe
and a time for being in danger.

A few days ago, I embarked on a diet.  Well, I won't go into too many details about it, except to say that a natural process happened.  I was anxious to make a process go faster, but I had to be patient.  I learned that you cannot rush anything.  I learned that I have to let life go at a natural pace.

When I read this particular verse of the Tao Te Ching, the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible came to mind.  Chapter 3, verses 1-8, are very similar:

1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2 A time to be born , and a time to die ; a time to plant , and a time to pluck up that which is  planted ; 3 A time to kill , and a time to heal ; a time to break down , and a time to build up ; 4 A time to weep , and a time to laugh ; a time to mourn , and a time to dance ; 5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together ; a time to embrace , and a time to refrain from embracing ; 6 A time to get , and a time to lose ; a time to keep , and a time to cast away ; 7 A time to rend , and a time to sew ; a time to keep silence , and a time to speak ; 8 A time to love , and a time to hate ; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Listen to the words in these two sets of words, whether from the Tao Te Ching or the Bible.  You will see that the word, "TIME," is in both.  It means to me that just like we have and want good times, we must also ride the bad or challenging times.  Life is not always pleasant.  I learned that on Monday.

When trying to get healthier, we must go through the ugly side.  Getting to the good side of health takes time.  Doing unpleasant exercises or diets is not fun.  Often, we would rather have shortcuts; however, we must practice patience.  Oh, and I'm gonna be honest: I am not always patient!

Some medical advice tells of a die off period when a person is healing.  This happens when an infection is clearing up, for example.  The pain is excruciating at the beginning.  Believe me; I know!  The relief does come, though, after the passage of time.

The next time we want a positive outcome to a given situation, we must remember that there is a time for everything.  Sometimes, we mourn.  Sometimes, we celebrate.  Sometimes, we suffer.  Sometimes, we prosper.

Thanks for reading today's post.
I appreciate it.

How about it, my friends?  Are you allowing nature to takes it course in your life?  Are you patiently awaiting the good things in life?  Or are you trying to rush things along?  I pray we wait on God for the good things.  Let's be patient when the trying times occur.
May God bless you, my beloveds, with His wisdom and peace, in Jesus' name.  Amen!

This has been an entry for Wisdom Wednesdays.

I am currently drawing inspiration from Dr. Wayne W. Dyer's book and the 81 verses of the Chinese wisdom book the Tao Te Ching.

Update on the Exercising

A calendar can help keep track of exercise.

It's time to get real.  I failed last week.  I really wanted to exercise everyday.  I didn't.  I feel bad about it.

It wasn't all my fault.  A vacation got in the way.  I had to pack toiletries, clothes, food, and etc.  I had to blog.  I had to sleep.

Then, we were on vacation.  Too many days of riding in a vehicle.  I was fatigued.  I was cooped up in the room.  It was too crowded to use the Wii.

Let's see what I did do.  I did use the exercise bike once.  I did use the Wii one day.  I walked a grocery store one day.  We walked around a park one day.

I take it that I exercised all together more than 105 minutes for the whole week.  I walked a lot more than 15 minutes on those two days that I walked at the store and the park.  I don't feel so bad, now.  Spreading the exercise out would have been nice.  What's done is done, though.

This is a chance to re-evaluate what needs tweaking.

I need to change something.  I think I need to enlist a calendar.  After exercising, I can write down what I've done.  If I spend 15 minutes on the Wii, I can put that down.  If I walk around the dining table for 10 minutes, I can put that down, too.

I think I might have to come down to 10 minutes a day for now.  I don't know why, but I am huffing a lot, lately.  I do know that I need to go to a doctor.  That is one health goal.  When I can handle more, I will amp up the exercise time for each day.

How about you, my readers?  Would you be able to keep up exercising while on vacation?  What if you had barely started exercising?  I hope to do better next week.  I hope you will consider joining me on the quest to get healthy.
